Freight FAQ
Quick answers to the questions shippers ask most.
How is road-freight pricing calculated?
Most road freight is priced on loading meters (LDM) or chargeable weight — whichever is greater — plus the lane, the diesel (fuel) surcharge, and any extras such as ADR or tail-lift. Use our calculators to estimate LDM and chargeable weight, then get a written quote.
What are loading meters (LDM)?
A loading meter is one metre of trailer length across its full 2.4 m width. A standard curtainsider has about 13.6 LDM. A single EUR pallet (1.2 by 0.8 m) placed lengthways uses roughly 0.4 LDM.
What is chargeable (volumetric) weight?
Light, bulky freight is billed on volume, not just scale weight. For EU road freight the common rule is 1 cubic metre equals 333 kg; the chargeable weight is the higher of actual and volumetric weight.
What is a diesel or fuel surcharge?
Carriers adjust the base rate up or down as diesel prices move against a baseline. The surcharge depends on how far diesel has moved and on the fuel share of total cost — our fuel-surcharge calculator shows the maths.
Do you handle customs for the UK and Switzerland?
Yes — non-EU lanes are run as customs-managed corridors, with the import declaration filed by licensed broker partners in the destination country. See the customs guides above.
How fast can I get a quote?
